Taking a Minute (1)... I get angry with Chapters

OK so here I am starting a rant I guess. I am angry at Canada's Chapters/Indigo and I am going to take a minute and talk about it. 


I used to (I probably still do but) LOVE spending hours, and I really mean hours as in 8 or around that, at Chapters. I'd grab a coffee, head straight to the Teens section stare at the shelves for a minute and sigh while my heart skipped a beat at the sight of all those books and then I'd go hunting! I would start with a pile of 20 books or so and Read! 8 hours later when it was time to go back home I was a little sad. 


Then I discovered The Story Siren! She is an amazing YA book blogger and if you don't know her you MUST HAVE been living under a rock for quite a while. She inspired me to start my own blog where I could share my newly rekindled passion for reading. And I did!


Then I went through her posts and saw things such as BEA, YALSA etc... So I started looking for similar fairs, or expositions in Canada. And guess what I found!? NOTHING! RIEN! NADA! ZILTCH! Now I have to save money (probably LOTS), get a passport and make my way to NYC because Chapters/Indigo snuffed out the Independent Bookstores in Canada and KILLED (yes, my Chapters is a murderer) BookExpo Canada. I am so very sad. AND ANGRY!

Then I started thinking, what can I do about this? I love my country but WE suck at Independent Bookstore keeping and such...


Should I open an Indie Bookstore?
Protest?
Beg for BEC to be resuscitated?
Occupy Chapters? ( tried to make a funny, I failed)


Can anyone tell me what can be done? Please! For the LOVE OF BOOKS!

My Review 


Across The Universe was an impossible book to put down. I'd be cooking dinner and reading and my pasta turned out over cooked as a result. Bad for the taste buds but good for the book! Now here is what I liked most out of it; THE CHAPTERS. They were perfectly thought out, paced and it was like when you watched a TV show and the scene cuts to another just when you start to get to the edge of your seat. OH WOW! The book had my heart beating to the point that I may or may not have developed heart palpitations as a result. Also, the socio-ethical themes in this book tied my brain in a "WHAT THE HELL" knot. Mind you I love it when my brain gets knotty. The book through me for a (good, very, VERY good) loop. Other than that here's my other likes/dislikes about the book.


What I liked:

• The characters were wonderfully fleshed out. You could relate very well to their personal conflicts. I love being able to connect in such with a character.
• The plot was good and well thought out. The back stories were yummy!
• THE COVER! 'nuff said!

What I didn't like:

• How jealous Elder would get. I'm sorry but a little is cute. He was a tiny bit freaky sometimes.
• How whiny Amy got a few times. 
• There's no third thing. That's that!

Author Interview and Giveaway: Jodi Meadows

Jodi Meadows, author of Incarnate has given me the honor of giving my first author interview! She is a 2012 debut author, her YA book, Incarnate, (which I am impossibly giddy and excited for) is set to be released January 31st 2012.

The Interview:



So what do you think of being published in, as you pointed out on twitter, a mere 90 days?
It's exciting! And a little scary. I'd like to say I'm totally cool about the whole thing and I go whole days without thinking about it, but no. I'm not, and I don't. At least once a day I suddenly remember that I have a book coming out, stop whatever I'm doing, and just . . . wow. It's really happening.


What gave you the (I must say great) idea for Incarnate? Where did your inspiration come from?
Inspiration and ideas are tricky things to pin down. I wrote a note about the premise and tucked it away in my "new ideas" file THREE YEARS before I ever started writing INCARNATE. Like most story ideas I have, the seed for INCARNATE came from an especially productive round of the "what if?" game.


I think the cover for your book is drop dead GORGEOUS!  What do you think?
Agreed! I could not be happier with the cover for INCARNATE. The model is perfect, the color treatment is perfect, and the butterfly is perfect. I love everything about it.


We all know you are a debut author, what do you do day to day?
No day is exactly the same. Sometimes I spend all day writing or revising. Other days, I take care of a lot of business emails. Occasionally I have to do tax stuff. (Ew.) Sometimes I write guest posts or answer interview questions. It's all work. 


This will be a trilogy right? Do you have any ideas for another series? (you don't have to tell what the ideas are of course!)
INCARNATE is the first book in a trilogy, yep! I have lots of other ideas for series and standalones. One of the hazards of being a writer is having more ideas than you know what to do with.


Favorite Ice cream flavor?
Chocolate chip cookie dough.


Next three books in your TBR pile!?
I don't have an order I'm reading it. I tend to pick out something based on my mood, or whatever won't cause an avalanche to reach. But a few things on my pile are POSSESS by Gretchen McNeil, EON by Alison Goodman, and LOLA AND THE BOY NEXT DOOR by Stephanie Perkins.
